Great-great-grandson of Thomas Donahue. I am confirmed by YDNA test (R1b1c7) as a descendant of the Breifne kingdom Donohoes. Family oral history holds that the Donahue roots are in Tyrone or Mayo. In fact, it may be both: Some Donohoes were expelled from the nine counties of Ulster to North Mayo and elsewhere in Connaught circa 1796 due to their activities as members of “The Defenders,” a militant group fighting for full Catholic emancipation and for Irish home rule. Thomas emigrated to Philadelphia circa 1839-1840. He married Catherine Dailey in Philadelphia circa 1844. They lived in an area of St. Michael’s Parish in Philadelphia that was later split off into St. Malachy’s Parish. Thomas is buried in St. Michael’s Churchyard; Catherine is in New Cathedral Cemetery.
