This mysterious figure was installed by the usurper Cormac Liathanach as king of O Donnchadha Mor over his brother Domnaill. Cathal had been
banished by his kinsmen from the kingship of Ui Echach for some unknown transgression. Whatever the case he was amongst the first Irish princes to be killed in the Norman Invasion as he met them at Port Lairge.
