Daniel Roycroft Donohue was born in Spokane, Washington on August 27, 1966. He grew up on Spokane’s South Hill and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1984.
Dan went on to study theatre at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. While there, he performed in 15 plays at Whitman’s Harper Joy Theatre between 1984 and 1988 including title roles in BULLDOG DRUMMOND, THE MISER, VINCENT, and CYRANO DE BERGERAC.
Dan made his professional debut in 1986 as Vladimir in Wendy Wasserstein’s ISN’T IT ROMANTIC at The Laughing Horse Summer Theatre in Ellensburg, Washington where he spent two summer seasons (1986 and 1987).
Dan graduated from Whitman College in 1988 with a B.A. in Theatre Arts and was chosen to be the class speaker at the commencement ceremony.
He then studied at Pennsylvania State University where he received an M.F.A in Acting in 1991. While a student at Penn State, Dan was selected as one of twelve national finalists in the 1990 Irene Ryan Acting competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
After graduate school, while living in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dan performed with several theatre companies between 1991 and 1994 including San Jose Stage Company, San Jose Repertory Theatre, CitiArts, City Lights Theatre Company, Pennsylvania Centre Stage, and The Utah Shakespearean Festival.
In 1994, Dan joined the acting company at The Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon where he has since played over 30 roles in 23 plays. Highlights of his Ashland career include the role of Dvornichek in Tom Stoppard’s ROUGH CROSSING, Mark Antony in JULIUS CAESAR, Touchstone in AS YOU LIKE IT, Edgar in KING LEAR, Andrew Aguecheek in TWELFTH NIGHT, and the three year cycle playing Hal in HENRY IV, PARTS 1 & 2 (1998 and 1999), and Henry in HENRY V (2000).
Other recent stage credits include Vincent van Gogh in the world premiere of Steven Dietz’s INVENTING VAN GOGH at Arizona Theatre Company and Truffaldino in THE SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS at Seattle’s Intiman Theatre.
At Seattle Repertory Theatre, Dan played Puck in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, Will "Shaksper" in THE BEARD OF AVON, and the role of Harlequin in both THE GAME OF LOVE AND CHANCE and THE TRIUMPH OF LOVE, adapted and directed by Stephen Wadsworth. THE TRIUMPH OF LOVE played at the Seattle Repertory Theatre, The Missouri Repertory Theatre, and The Long Wharf Theatre in 2003.
Film and television credits include THE CONTRACT, THE DREW CAREY SHOW, and the yet unreleased independent comedy, BIGFEET, in which Dan was both actor and co-producer.
In 2002, he was the recipient of the Whitman College Pete Reid Award for Young Alumni as well as the Pennsylvania State University 2002 Alumni Achievement Award for the School of Arts and Architecture.
Dan can currently be seen in the role of Scar in the national Broadway tour of THE LION KING, directed by Julie Taymor, which will be performed in St. Louis, Louisville, Memphis, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Detroit, Columbus, Boston, Buffalo, Minneapolis, Baltimore, Birmingham, Providence, and Norfolk through January 2006.
