Who was he/she?:
A lifelong Chicagoan who became a Civil engineer and helped design the famous "reversal" of the Chicago River, which was the underpinning of the early Chicago Sanitary Boards efforts to drain the low lying city of water, and handle waste. At the time Chicagoans dubbed the reversal of the River, the 8th wonder of the world(1892). George went on to become the first General superintendent of the Chicago Park District and was responsible for procuring the famed "Buckingham Fountain" as a gift to Chicago from England.
Why it was named after him/her?:
He was a famous and productive Chicagoan who did a lot to improve the lives of her citizens. He was honored for his lifetime achievements by naming the school after him, following his death in 1962.
