The beautiful game — a gift to the world from Glasgow
Thomas Donohoe, from Busby in East Renfrewshire — now part of Greater Glasgow — was a skilled textile worker when he emigrated to Bangu near Rio de Janeiro in 1894 and established the first five-a-side games there. He is credited as the “father of Brazilian football” and his statue stands over Bangu.
